The formula

volume at bottling = (barrel WG x barrel proof / 100) x 100 / bottling proof; bottles = usable volume / bottle size

27 CFR 5.22 (bourbon must be bottled at 80 proof minimum). This tool uses the same calculation as the Spirit Sight platform. It is general information, not tax or legal advice.

How many bottles are in a barrel of bourbon?
It depends on barrel volume, proof, and bottling strength. A typical 53-gallon barrel proofed down often yields ~150-200 750ml bottles; use the calculator with your exact numbers.
What is processing loss?
Spirit lost during filtration, transfer, and bottling, commonly around 2%. The calculator subtracts it from usable volume.
